Hair Bows

Part of me will always love dressing like a child. My boyfriend often compares my dress sense to a confused 15 year old emo. Anyway, I have no idea about fashion. I've always been a bit shit at it. I just wear things I like or that I don't think make me look as fat. I would like to start making clothes but I am a bit nervous about it.. so my way in shall be accessories.

I watched a few tutorials on youtube to get the basic idea of how to construct a bow (Annika Victoria, smarmyclothes were particularly useful) then from there I kind of just made it up and tried a few different things.

They are really pretty. The smaller one is easier to wear but it's nice to have options.

I made the yellow bow by sewing two different fabrics together to get the pattern contrast.

I sewed a hair grip into the back of each bow so they can slide into hair.

Not a bad use for off cuts of fabric!

In other news, I've spent this week mainly making cushion covers and up-cycling chairs so that will probably be up in the next few days.

Ombre Felt Heart Garland

As a little follow on from Peppermint Butler's post, I also made an ombre heart garland to hang from the shelf he chills on.

I went through a phase a few months back where I began to panic due to the lack of colour scheme in my front room. Basically, I think I had spent too much time reading Kirsty Allsopp books and looking on home decor threads on Pinterest. However, my panicked reaction was I needed to find a colour that would tie everything together.

So off I went, I bought a new rug with the faint outline of orange flowers and decided some orange fake flowers, candles and some new cushions for the sofa would do the trick. It didn't work. Firstly, orange cushions seemed impossible to find ANYWHERE so I had to pick a variation including some shades of yellow. Meh, they would do. The problem was, it still didn't feel like much of a 'theme'. I've never really been one to worry about what goes with what in my interiors- but this was becoming an obsession.

I knew what I needed- a new felt dingle-dangle!

To tie in with the fact I had no longer just orange in mind but now 'warm tones' (see how I got around that one?) I decided to make my garland ombre from orange to yellow. This was such a simple make and I personally think it looks lovely. I hand stitched a very basic running stitch around my heart shapes, catching in a piece of string across everyone as I sewed to create the bunting/garland..thing. They are all stuffed with toy stuffing, which is super cheap to pick up from any haberdashery.

The shelf is currently cluttered with the overspill of books from our bookshelf and some PS3 games. And obviously some of my many cats from my 'cat collection', this isn't weird, no?

Simple yet effective!

How else could I get the colour theme in my lounge? Curtains? Other craft ideas? Let me know! Maybe I need some new inspiration for a home decor project..

Also, do you lot like my life-size cat? He's not real or stuffed don't worry! We got him from a shop display window- you donate to their charity and you get a piece of their display. Clearly I needed him in my life. He's one cool dude. He also provides a great place to put your sunglasses!

Adventure Time- Peppermint Butler

Okay, so I know I made him ages ago but as I have a blog now (that I haven't deleted on going problem- i'm hoping this one will stick) I still felt he deserved a post.

Last Christmas I decided to make Jason one of his favourite characters from 'Adventure Time', Peppermint Butler. He is super cute and I thought he would be relatively simple to make.

The problem with living with someone your hand-making a gift for is that you rarely get an opportunity to actually do it. So, there I was, 11pm on Christmas eve hiding in the bedroom frantically sewing on limbs like a crazy person. I look at him now and can see mistakes left, right and centre but hey ho, he carries lovely memories.

Jason loved him. And he is very cute, isn't he?

I love his little bow!

Here is Jason on Christmas morning when he first met Pepper (taken from my instagram) awhhh! Flat complete with paper snowflakes and everything!

Who is your favourite Adventure Time character? I think I might have to make another member of the cast soon!

Watercolour- Bright Hair Ladies

The pictures are sadly not great, however, I wanted to get a post up on some drawings I have done lately.

I have recently been embarking on some freelance illustration work so I wanted to get clued up on some techniques and mediums I didn't feel that confident with.

Watercolour pencils may be my new favourite thing-ever.

I found some pretty ladies on Pinterest to use as my muse, who for a strange coincidence both hair blue/purple hair. Maybe it is an inner longing to dye my hair WHO KNOWS. Anyway, I have always been a bog-standard pencil sketcher (mainly to put together compositions for paintings) so I rummaged through my endless pots of pencils-pulled out the fine liners and got going.

 Here's the process:

Picture 1.

I first sketched in pencil then went over in a fine liner..

Then I added colour with the watercolour pencils..

Finally, I blended the colour with water and a paint brush and TA DA! Oh actually, I also shaded some areas with a promarker- which are also lovely to use.

Picture 2.

Nearly there..

All done.

I should mention, the colour does look a bit on the orange side due to not having the best camera.

I am actually really pleased with how these turned out so it is a technique I will carry on working with. I will also work on trying to perfect the lighting to make them look a little less Essex a little more English rose.

Let me know what you think! Have you worked with watercolour before? Any mediums to recommend?

Much love,

Katie x
